Prepared for Success

Your support gives children the hope and confidence to start the school year right!

It’s just before noon at Cesar Chavez High School as a steady stream of parents and energetic children make their way into the school’s gymnasium. Although the event has been underway for a number of hours, there hasn’t been a moments pause in the lineup of families waiting to get inside. Today is an exciting day for the children gathered here, and perhaps more significantly, a day of relief for the parents. For them, the question of how they are going to provide the back to school supplies their kids need for the upcoming school
year has been answered.

“It’s just such a huge thing!” says Ronda, one of the parents in attendance with her four kids. “To be able to come here and take care of all this, it just takes so much of the pressure off.” The large event required 30 volunteers. Volunteer Cheri and her young daughter Riley are here at the event helping hand out backpacks to the children. Riley, with help from her parents, worked to raise more than $1,200 for backpacks and school supplies through selling bracelets via social media.

Through your partnership, Phoenix Rescue Mission prepared more than 1,200 children for success this school year by providing free backpacks, school supplies, and uniforms they otherwise would go without. Thank you for your continuing support that helps us to even the playing field and give all kids – regardless of their family’s financial situation - a winning chance to succeed.

Back to School Success

The Phoenix Rescue Mission  distributed nearly 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to children across Maricopa County  prepare for the 2018 2019 school year. At our annual Back to School event held at Cesar Chavez High School, more than 600 children got to pick out a new backpack filled with all the required school supplies, uniforms, and books!

Bernadette Jackson, a stay-at-home mother of four, who says any assistance she can get for her family is a blessing.

"It does come to help with all the children that I have, especially my three little ones that are starting to go to preschool with uniforms that can cost a lot," said Jackson. Between the backpacks, books and uniforms, it's a great way to ease the burden of getting back-to-school ready.

Because of partners, donors, and volunteers. the Phoenix Rescue Mission is able to make a great impact in our community by serving the children of our city.

"We just want to be able to connect them with what they need, and hopefully through that just alleviate some of the stress they might be dealing with," said Jussane Carrera, the community connections coordinator for Phoenix Rescue Mission.

This annual event would not be possible without the support of our community. Because of you, nearly 2,000 backpacks have be given away by the Mission to organizations across Maricopa county, helping children have everything they need to go back to school with confidence. Thank you.

Because of partners like Aetna Medicaid and Banner Aetna, who worked with the AZ Christian ERG to supply 1,200 backpacks for this incredible cause, children are going back to school with more than just supplies. Children are going back to school with confidence, and a fresh start to their school year. Thank you for your support!

Thank you Aetna for supplying the 1,200 backpacks we needed for our Back to School Event!

Back to School Event

The first day of school can be an anxious time for any child. It’s especially tough for the kids who come from low income families and unstable households. The ones who’ve grown up destitute or even homeless. At the Mission, we see them every day at our Changing Lives Center for Women & Children. They’re full of potential, but circumstances beyond their control have held them back. They deserve our love and support. For kids like these, the first day of school can bring taunting, teasing, and trouble focusing on their studies. They can fall behind their classmates, simply because they lack access to school supplies so many of us take for granted. But through your support of Phoenix Rescue Mission’s Back-to-School event, you can offer children a better chance at a brighter future. Your support will provide Maricopa County kids with backpacks, clothing, school supplies . . . everything they need to succeed in the new school year! It’s heartbreaking to think of less fortunate children in our community starting school at a disadvantage because their families can’t afford adequate supplies.

You can help someone like Estelle, a grandmother of five children, ranging in age from 6 to 13. She works, but her paycheck just barely stretches to cover rent and food for the family. Estelle couldn’t stand the thought of her beloved grand kids showing up to school empty-handed on their first day. Like any parent or grandparent, she only wanted what’s best for the children in her care: “I want them to do well in school, and that’s hard if you think you don’t measure up,” she says. Though she came to the Mission with a look of desperation in her eyes, Estelle left with a cheerful smile. “All five of my grand babies got school uniforms in the right size and were able to pick a backpack,” she reports. “I went from worry to peace when I saw the number of people who cared.” It is through your support and love that families like Estelle's are prepared for the school year. Please give generously today to help more kids like Estelle’s get the clothing and supplies they need to succeed in school. Thank you in advance for your caring heart.

Phoenix Rescue Mission helps 600 disadvantaged students head back-to-school

MEDIA ADVISORY

Students in grades K-12 will receive fully-stocked backpacks, uniform vouchers and sports physicals during Saturday, July 25 event

WHO: Phoenix Rescue Mission and 600 students in grades K-12.

WHAT: Homeless and poor students from various Title I District schools throughout the Valley will receive backpacks, uniforms, back-to-school supplies and equipment, and sports physicals.

WHY: Every year Phoenix Rescue Mission hosts its back-to-school event so children of homeless and poor families have the same opportunity for success as every other student. If not for Phoenix Rescue Mission, it’s donors and volunteers, many of these children would begin the school year without the necessary tools to thrive. This not only sets them back academically but also decreases their self-esteem and overall well-being, decreasing their chances for future success.

WHEN: Saturday, July 25, from 9 – 11 a.m.

WHERE: Contact Nicole Peña or Josh Skalniak for location details (contact info below)

VISUALS:

  • More than 500 elementary and middle school students will receive backpacks filled with school supplies and school uniforms.
  • 100 high school students will receive free sports physicals.
  • Phoenix Rescue Mission will be signing up poor and homeless families to receive food boxes, as well as offering case management and vocational development services.
  • A Phoenix Rescue Mission spokesperson will be on hand to talk about the Mission and its work to ensure underprivileged children in the community are not forgotten.
  • Disadvantaged families may be available to talk about what it means to them that the community is stepping up to help the underprivileged.

Phoenix Rescue Mission provides Christ-centered, life-transforming solutions to persons facing hunger and homelessness. The non-profit Mission, which has been operating since 1952, is asking the public for support of its many programs designed to save lives, including Hope Coach Street Outreach, Homeless Emergency Services, Men’s Addiction Recovery Program and the new Changing Lives Center for Women and Children.
