Back to School? How your support gives kids hope for the school year

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected us all in different ways. It’s possible that life will never be the same. But beyond the sickness and the social distancing, there’s one group affected who are easily overlooked.

Our school children.

There are thousands of families who have lost jobs, been furloughed, or have otherwise seen their income dry up with no warning over the past few months. Edith’s family is one of them.

“The virus hit us really hard because we weren’t expecting it,” says Edith. “I got laid off.”

Just a few months ago, she was employed at Amazon and supporting three kids, while she worked on becoming a Registered Nurse. Today, she needs help affording school supplies for her children.

Thankfully, our Back to School event is coming up on July 25th. Edith and her family will be attending for the first time – and she couldn’t be more grateful for your support that makes it possible.

Edith volunteers her time as a member of the PTA in the Murphy Elementary School District. As a member, she’s been involved with many of the events Phoenix Rescue Mission hosts there to help families. But that was before she joined the 824,412 individuals in Arizona who have found themselves out of work since the week of March 21st. Now she’s on the other side.

“Getting ready for school after what has happened with the coronavirus is tough! The Phoenix Rescue Mission is helping a lot of families and bringing smiles to a lot of kids. We’re all very grateful!”

Every year, with your support, Phoenix Rescue Mission provides school supplies, backpacks, uniforms and shoes to Phoenix area Title 1 School Districts – everything kids need to thrive and succeed. The event gives children hope, levels the playing field with their peers and provides a connecting point to keep their family on the road to success.

“If we find that a family has a need for food or clothing, or maybe they are getting evicted and need assistance getting into a shelter, we can help them with those things or connect them with the right resources to get the help that they need,” says Pam Morrison, our Community Relationship Officer. “Our goal is to remove barriers and help stabilize families which improves the opportunity for children to get an education.”

While families like Edith’s are busy trying to make ends meet – to keep food on the table and the air conditioner running – school supplies are, understandably, a low priority. Together, we can keep hope moving forward for these little ones.

“If we have leftover items at the end of the event,” says Pam, “we give those supplies and uniforms to the parent liaison to provide for any homeless students that come their way throughout the year.”

“There’s such a need for those backpacks and supplies,” says Edith. “I know these kids are excited to get back into the classroom. They’ve got the motivation if we can provide the resources.”

Our Back to School event is just a few weeks away on July 25th.

Let’s make sure every child who attends goes away smiling. Thank you for the support that gives our students hope!

Prepared for Success

Your support gives children the hope and confidence to start the school year right!

It’s just before noon at Cesar Chavez High School as a steady stream of parents and energetic children make their way into the school’s gymnasium. Although the event has been underway for a number of hours, there hasn’t been a moments pause in the lineup of families waiting to get inside. Today is an exciting day for the children gathered here, and perhaps more significantly, a day of relief for the parents. For them, the question of how they are going to provide the back to school supplies their kids need for the upcoming school
year has been answered.

“It’s just such a huge thing!” says Ronda, one of the parents in attendance with her four kids. “To be able to come here and take care of all this, it just takes so much of the pressure off.” The large event required 30 volunteers. Volunteer Cheri and her young daughter Riley are here at the event helping hand out backpacks to the children. Riley, with help from her parents, worked to raise more than $1,200 for backpacks and school supplies through selling bracelets via social media.

Through your partnership, Phoenix Rescue Mission prepared more than 1,200 children for success this school year by providing free backpacks, school supplies, and uniforms they otherwise would go without. Thank you for your continuing support that helps us to even the playing field and give all kids – regardless of their family’s financial situation - a winning chance to succeed.

Back to School Success

The Phoenix Rescue Mission  distributed nearly 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to children across Maricopa County  prepare for the 2018 2019 school year. At our annual Back to School event held at Cesar Chavez High School, more than 600 children got to pick out a new backpack filled with all the required school supplies, uniforms, and books!

Bernadette Jackson, a stay-at-home mother of four, who says any assistance she can get for her family is a blessing.

"It does come to help with all the children that I have, especially my three little ones that are starting to go to preschool with uniforms that can cost a lot," said Jackson. Between the backpacks, books and uniforms, it's a great way to ease the burden of getting back-to-school ready.

Because of partners, donors, and volunteers. the Phoenix Rescue Mission is able to make a great impact in our community by serving the children of our city.

"We just want to be able to connect them with what they need, and hopefully through that just alleviate some of the stress they might be dealing with," said Jussane Carrera, the community connections coordinator for Phoenix Rescue Mission.

This annual event would not be possible without the support of our community. Because of you, nearly 2,000 backpacks have be given away by the Mission to organizations across Maricopa county, helping children have everything they need to go back to school with confidence. Thank you.

Because of partners like Aetna Medicaid and Banner Aetna, who worked with the AZ Christian ERG to supply 1,200 backpacks for this incredible cause, children are going back to school with more than just supplies. Children are going back to school with confidence, and a fresh start to their school year. Thank you for your support!

Thank you Aetna for supplying the 1,200 backpacks we needed for our Back to School Event!

Back to School Event

The first day of school can be an anxious time for any child. It’s especially tough for the kids who come from low income families and unstable households. The ones who’ve grown up destitute or even homeless. At the Mission, we see them every day at our Changing Lives Center for Women & Children. They’re full of potential, but circumstances beyond their control have held them back. They deserve our love and support. For kids like these, the first day of school can bring taunting, teasing, and trouble focusing on their studies. They can fall behind their classmates, simply because they lack access to school supplies so many of us take for granted. But through your support of Phoenix Rescue Mission’s Back-to-School event, you can offer children a better chance at a brighter future. Your support will provide Maricopa County kids with backpacks, clothing, school supplies . . . everything they need to succeed in the new school year! It’s heartbreaking to think of less fortunate children in our community starting school at a disadvantage because their families can’t afford adequate supplies.

You can help someone like Estelle, a grandmother of five children, ranging in age from 6 to 13. She works, but her paycheck just barely stretches to cover rent and food for the family. Estelle couldn’t stand the thought of her beloved grand kids showing up to school empty-handed on their first day. Like any parent or grandparent, she only wanted what’s best for the children in her care: “I want them to do well in school, and that’s hard if you think you don’t measure up,” she says. Though she came to the Mission with a look of desperation in her eyes, Estelle left with a cheerful smile. “All five of my grand babies got school uniforms in the right size and were able to pick a backpack,” she reports. “I went from worry to peace when I saw the number of people who cared.” It is through your support and love that families like Estelle's are prepared for the school year. Please give generously today to help more kids like Estelle’s get the clothing and supplies they need to succeed in school. Thank you in advance for your caring heart.
