Working at the Mission: "Most mornings now, I get out of bed at about 4 or 5 am. Mondays, it's 3 am. I wipe the sleep out of my eyes and brew a coffee while I run through a mental checklist of the day ahead. I also look at memes and fantasy football. The world starts to wake up and move along with me. It amazes me how many other folks are going to and from work as well. I'm reminded of words that my grandfather used to say, "Jake, by 9 am, the day is half over." If you get up at 4 am, you're not wrong.I see construction workers with their bright orange and yellow, carrying coffee, water, and lunch to the job site. I see suits and hardhats, beamers and pick-ups, all converging in one of the strangest most beautiful places that I think I've ever called home. And I see the folks that I serve - people experiencing homelessness - with their giant Circle K sodas, cigarettes hanging from their mouths, and usually smiles on their faces as they see the van I drive roll up. They ask "Hey Jake, how 'bout them Packers? How was your weekend?" We talk and joke and I know each one of them by name. I worry about them and breathe a sigh of relief when I see them after the weekend. And when I look at them I know that we are more alike than we are different.I've been blessed beyond measure to stumble into one of the most unique, crazy, incredible opportunities of my already eclectic and scattered life. Working for the Phoenix Rescue Mission alongside the Street Outreach team has challenged me, shaped me, and convicted me already in two short months. I work with and learn from some of the best people I have met in my entire journey on this earth so far. I often think I don't belong - how in the world was I chosen to do this work? But then I remember that we all have a story...and this is part of mine."- Jake, Street Outreach Team------------Want to join this life-giving work? We're hiring!
